This is really cool but I personally like Daytona USA more that VIRTUA racing .  I would be really cool to see any part of Daytona running on pico 8 but still this is really impressive for pico-8 hardware, reminds me of pico world race but just a little visually worse (but your game still looks cool I just like the look of pico world race)

Hoooooooo, you devs are crazy, but you... you're a special one didnt it! also somtimes maps lack of invisible walls.. i mean there is a wall, but i going of the map through textures because of my skill issue. Windows version. All the greatness to you!

I mean seeing your projects, its thats much cool like if the PSX Blodborne dev transfer a full game to the pc, add a invade functionality and make a PS1 capable version as well

I can't find this on the PICO-8 0.2.6b program using search. I tried Virtua Racing and vracing. Nothing came up on the search. I did download the linux game version from this page. Thanks for game.

virtua racing uses a technique called ‘multi-cart’ not compatible with splore.

you can download the p8 files, see the ‘standalone’ version for that.

ok I will download the standalone. Thanks.

I bought this but I have a device which can only use .p8.png files. Could you please provide such a download, thank you!

thanks - did you try the standalone package?

Yes, there were no .p8.png file in that zip and when I selected it on my device, the screen just turned black and nothing happened. I need a single .p8.png file, I think.

a single p8.png file is not an option.

that game is made of 15 carts - if your emulator doesn’t support multi-cart games, you are out of luck.

Seek a refund from itch?

great! better then sega rally

Awesome!

Yeah that's great, now do Daytona USA in pico-8 this is all I want.

"gta 6 leak"

Hey this looks good but is it possible for you to expand the game to the bbs if possible?

absolutely not - the game relies heavily on a type of multicart that is not compatible with bbs.

Oh ok :(

How do I switch to high-detail mode? I can't find it in the options

from pause menu (p keys)

The physics and handling seems off.

Even if I try to spin out, it just doesn't happen

i like to play the virtual racing deluxe on genesis x32, and when i saw that you remake it, i was like "holy senna, did they?", i played and i'll love to say that this project its very cute and i love it, it might not have alot of features like the deluxe version, but i just love this style that it looks like it's from sega game gear, would pay for the download (even if its free) if i got money

I dont remember it lagging so much, has anything changed ? perhaps maybe the web pico8 player had a bad update ?

there has been no update to web player - and just tested, runs just fine

okay mb then

genial

merci!

This is art!

cool

impressive result!

What a lot of work! Thx so much!

I want to play it with P8 Player,

But i need to have direct link (online) to have cart.

How Can i do?

Thx for your help!😉

(1 edit)

download vracing_10_standalone.zip files and unpack in Pico8 carts folder.

load "vracing_title" to start game

thx for your tip!

But i don't find this folder (cartes folder) o Android

P8 Player needs URL to download game.

(It works vert well like that for Poom)

Have you got an Idea?

So fun ! Excellent

whaaat? you are not supposed to be able to cut through grass!

let me fix that 😜

Guess you could say this is the first VR game playable on a web browser?

I guess - there is no official ports I know of.

virtua racing, vr? get it?

ah not even - there is a number of VR standards for web!

sorry

(1 edit)

Very cool. How do I buy/get this for Pico-8? - there're only js/win/linux etc. versions but no p8-png even though it says Pico-8.

download the ‘standalone’ version and install into your carts/ folder

(1 edit)

Ooh - thanks! - will try. I did check it earlier but found no obvious release p8 or p8.png file in it.

(2 edits)

Thanks! - never tried a multi-file game before - didn't know it was possible but it works :) - very impressive!

First I tried just copying/running vracing_main but that corrupted the pico8_dyn file ruining the Pico-8 installation entirely (on 351elec) bit after replacing the pico8_dyn (I've had the issue before with another game) you game worked nicely :) - it'd be great with a single png 'cartridge'.

Amazing that you could get it to run so perfectly (and I love that there's no music while you focus on driving).

games are supposed to be deployed in their own folders, not overwrite Pico8 devkit package!

Oh thanks. Do you mean that each and every .P8.PNG carts are supposed to be placed in their own seperate uniquely named folder? - will they still appear in one list then when browsing the games and be easily run?

no - only large games like VRacing are easier to install/update/remove in their own folder.

the Windows/Mac/... versions however are not meant to be installed in the Pico8 folder - they are plain executables.

wow, this is amazing. The physics are really good and its so smooth, i mean as smooth as it ca be. it plays really well. i dont think i ever played this back in the day, in fact the only 3d games i remember from back then was lawnmower man with its weird bous sections, and starfox. i mean i know there were 3d games out there, but on the consoles, there werent many, and i never knew this existed for the megadrive. i thought this kinda thing was only out in arcades and then on the next gen like the playstation and saturn etc. anyway, this is epic. great job man.

Freds72 this is an amazing game! please make more of this in the future!

This is impressive well done! Now we just need a Daytona demake…

and I disagree - make  sure you remove the link, I never allowed my game to be hosted on your advert site.

One of the best pico 8 games I've played, 100/10. The gameplay is amazing, the fact you squeezed it into pico 8 is amazing, EVERYTHING about it is just... amazing! I think it would be cool if you can try to demake the initial d arcade games, just a suggestions. Again amazing work!

Thanks!

What "initial arcade games" are you refering to?

I believe this person is referring to the "Initial D" arcade racing series. The gap between the flat-shaded polygons of Virtua Racing and Initial D's more photorealistic look is VAST!

Got it - was not aware of this serie, thanks!

I just got into PICO-8 last weekend. This is my first game purchased. I'm so utterly impressed.  I was a 3D guy on the Amiga in the 80's and it became my profession. In the 90's I loved Virtua Racing.

Excellent work on this!!!

I realize you are dithering to compensate for lack of colors, but is it possible to have solid fill by pressing up and down together to toggle dither vs solid (of course we'd lose the shading).

Outstanding.  Seriously!

thanks - indeed quite happy how it turned out.

I was there during the Amiga area (player, not coder), any 3d production I might know? (DM on Twitter if preferred)

Solid shading: if you have a pico licence, quite easy to try out - not going to add an option as it will ‘hide’ many polygons

Deleted 3 years ago

thanks for the extensive resume!

How did you make it 3d? Is the 3d engine handmade

it is home made, from various material + improved over a couple of games - you can read the devlog to find out some behind the cover information.

Impressive!

🙌❤

help i cant start

accelerate with z

i cant accelerate with o. but the rest is cool

this game is cool, but sometimes hard to control on keyboard. Fun game!

(1 edit) (+1)

Sadly this seems to no longer work in the latest version of pico-8 (0.2.2). It crashes when starting a race.

on what platform? Tested when 0.2.2 came out and got no crash on Windows.

Win10, running on a Win GPD 1:

I also tested on my normal PC (also Win10) and it works fine.

(+1)

Ok so crash is limited to your Win GPD 1 - is the carts folder correctly set?

Load title cart, type: ls - it should list all other virtua racing carts. If not, it means your pico8 config.txt is not pointing at the right location.

Thanks, setting root_path in config.txt fixed the issue.

gaming

hi. the game looks cool but the o button doesn't work for me and I can't accelerate. pls fix

It is not the o button it looks like it but it is either z or c

This is outstanding! I cannot believe my favorite game has been recreated in such detail, on... PICO-8, of all things. Mind is blown.

I have but one question however. You say that you got all the models from the Mega Drive version of the game... could you shoot me any tools or tips that could help me do the same? I want to use them for animations, not my own games, but I have no clue where to start.

You also mentioned Blender, which I do have. (Tools that work with Linux are sparse. Tools made for Linux are even more sparse.)

I hope I'm not wasting any of your time in asking this.

Amazing piece of work, but I don't understand how we're meant to actually play the Raspberry Pi version if it can't be put on a cart...

thanks!

on a device, you need to download the binaries (or the standalone zip).

(3 edits)

I've done that with the standalone version, and I can get Big Forest to play by running vracing_main.p8, but vracing_title.p8 crashes just after you select a track :(  (Raspberry Pi 3b running Emulation Station.)

The vracing_v10_raspi.zip version just doesn't work at all.

what is your pico8 version?

The latest one, 0.2.1b.

can you post a screenshot of the crash?

You're the best game dev out there man. I love all your games!

I am not the best but thanks anyway!
