*EDIT* Nevermind! I needed to update to Pico8 V0.2.2. Now works great, thanks!

Hi. I've just tried the .p8 files from the standalone version on my pi pico8 set up but after selecting the Poom-0 file via Splore it looks like it loads then the screen goes off. Any ideas? Am I missing something?

Do You have an APK file for Android users ?

no - pick html version

Hit with a massive wave of nostalgia seeing my dad play the Acorn version in front of my bewildered 8 year old eyes. Technically astounding, energy and atmosphere captured perfectly, and yes the PICO res compared to DOS throws my brain for a loop, but I can't help but be enamored by how impressive this is.

Thanks - glad you see the game true to its model!

I played on NG, for now this is my favorite 3D game made in engines like PICO-8

thanks - Newgrounds version has leaderboard, good for speedrunning or just the additional challenge!

Aside from being a very technically impressive port, it's actually very fun to play, looks beautiful with the Pico-8 palette to me feels hard to believe that this game is only showing 16 colors. My only complain is that I got some motion sickness I had to take some pauses, but that might be only myself lmao.

thanks! Sorry for motion sickness, that’s fairly common to the fps genre!

(if you play on mobile, try a desktop pc - some mobile struggle a bit performance wise)

Hi, the MacOS version doesn't run on Mojave as of 10th Feb 2021; thankfully I do have my own copy of PICO-8, but I'm not exactly good at using it myself haha!! Looking forward to playing it, though.

A new version of pico8 is around the corner, may solve that.

Awesome, thank you!!

Amazing Demake! But corners are weird in the sense that you can see through 90° corners if you are positioned correctly, I just realised that its a trade off because of the limited power of the PICO 8. Also I love how powerful the fists are, reminds me of how powerful the knives are in Serious Sam Games.

First off, this is an actually INCREDIBLE showing. Thanks to Pico Fox, I knew 3D could work, but this is on another level. It looks good, feels good, is good. And the soundtrack too, masterfully capturing the thrash metal soundtrack in 8-bit form. It even has multiple levels of difficulty! Easily one of the most interesting ports of Doom I've seen a good while, and an awesome Pico game. Easy 10/10

Thanks - teamwork can do wonders 😬

Where to start? This was my first Pico-8 game I have ever played and after this my bar is set REALLY high.

The team did an amazing job, The graphics are amazing for the limitations of the pico-8, soundtrack although short, only 3 songs, stays true to the original 93 Doom ost, wich is amazing as well. The gameplay is fluid, well built and the levels are deep and interesting to explore, the secrets are fun to search and find as well. You have 5 levels and 4 degrees of difficulty like the original doom as well.

Yeah, it's short, but it's a good hour or two you spent in Poom. Did I think I was playing doom? Yes, but the best thing I can say about this game is, I want to play more Poom as much as I want to play Doom!

Congratulations to the team for the amazing effort and powerful result! Will keep an eye on the other releases for sure!

Thanks! Tiago

thanks🙏

My god this is amazing, I literally haven't come across anything better on the whole of itch.io!

All using 64-bit textures? this is graphical astonishment!

thanks but this is using 4-bits textures, eg max of 16 colors.

And that’s the excellent job of @ParanoidCactus!

so sorry, i don't know why i said 64-bit textures :p that's even more impressive!!

I'm amazed at how much technical knowledge of PICO-8 this must have required. Seriously, great job.

If I had to provide one piece of constructive criticism it would be that if the middle of an enemy sprite is visible, then the whole sprite is drawn even if it's in front of a corner that should obscure part of it, but I'm not sure how possible that would be to fix, it depends how you're utilizing the sprite system. But if you can't fix it don't even sweat it, it's phenomenal already.

thanks - I am aware of this bug and it’s a trade off between performance choices and this side effect. It actually happens only when monsters are near some geometry separators, eg actually quite rarely.

(+1)

more retro than the original ever was ^^, sweet. Could use some mipmapping on the textures tho.

thanks - indeed mipmapping would help but game is already maxing graphical storage capacity of pico8 🤷‍♂️

cool

From the Niche Situations camp: Has anyone been able to run this on Pocket C.H.I.P.?

(one option would be to get the standalone version and inject it into the ~/.lexaloffle/pico-8/carts folder, but can't find the standalone version anymore)

(1 edit) (+2)

oops - my bad, fixing that

done - 1.7 standalone version available for download.

(1 edit)

Well, it works great! Thanks!

Just a minor thing, I found no way to open the usual Esc/Enter menu (understandable since Enter = arms selection), so I have to resort to Ctrl+Q from PICO-8 to quit (no way to go back to Splore).

(+2)

Hit pause a second time to bring standard menu!

Good luck playing with PocketChip keyboard!!

So cramped! But that is part of the fun...

I don't think you realize and appreciate the constraints of the PICO-8 system and how developing a functional and enjoyable Doom port on it is a major achievement.

Great remake! I got lost in the last few levels but I eventually found the door in true Doom fashion. I'm glad it wasn't too long because I don't terribly enjoy the find-the-key gameplay and I'm more of point gun and shoot player. Despite the limitations, the shooting mechanic was very satisfying and the FPS was fantastic (unlike my old memories of Doom on my old DOS computer).

(1 edit) (+3)

Thanks - getting lost is part of the charm, today’s games are much too guided imho!

what am i supposed to do

shoot bad guys

find keys

open doors

exit level

where are the keys

example on first level - use button (right click to lower the platform), then pick up key card and use that to open the door with a blue stripping pattern.

thx

Great adaption. I love playing this on my mobile.

So pretty...

Too bad i'm broke.

thanks and no problem - come back when rich :]

Am i stupid and this is a joke or you don't know that this is free?

some people like contributing and feel ‘bad’ using the free path.

is the new mac link out

THIS IS DOOM IN ITCH.IO!

(+1)

This is a very nice port/remake. Very true to the original game as far as possible. Great work! Would you be interested to make more content (levels/monsters/weapons) please? I finished but I'd like to play some more of this. Kind regards -CodeImp, Pascal van der Heiden

(+1)

thanks!

the project was already a huge undertaking, so far no plan for new levels.

That said, the game uses standard Doom tools, so you can roll your own custom levels.

Is there a button to switch weapons. Because I ran out of ammo in one gun and couldn't switch.

middle mouse button opens weapon wheel

Thank You

love playing old school doom

an amazon original;)

Wonderfully done, but did anyone here have any luck running the game under retro8_libretro?

You have talent boy. After some time I taught this made Romero itself. Please continue in this. Also question. Will you add pistol and other guns and demons and of course more songs?

PS: It is possible to increase rate of fire on Plasma gun?

Art is @paranoidcactus, thanks!

And: no, no and no ;)

That is sad because I like it. And I want more levels.

This game is a total blast and the reason I'm now playing Quake AGAIN (yeah I know Doom was the main inspiration but well) along with Poom and offered you 2 beers ;). Only complain though, the mouse is trapped as long as the game is running: can't use Chrome or any other program on Windows unless I quit Poom to get the pointer back. Nope, Alt+Tab does not work :). Is there a way to untrap the mouse in-game, like in most emulators, or to add this option? By pressing a key maybe, or unfocussing the game, or when Pico-8 regular menu appears (with 2x ESC or ENTER)?

thanks!

(and Quake is also dear to my heart!)

escape should do the trick (as mouse capture requires a click on the game)

Hi Fred, thanks for your reply, alas pressing ESC does not work, nor the Win key or any other. I forgot to precise this concerns the desktop version in a window (not fullscreen) on Win 7 64 bits. Poom app traps the mouse as soon as the pointer flies over its window, no click is needed, even if this window isn't focused. Focusing another window has no effect either (except if this other window covers Poom window). I also tried flying a bit over the unfocused Poom windows, get outside it and click anywhere on Windows desktop, in case it was just the pointer that got hidden, but no, the mouse is indeed trapped in Poom once the pointer hovers its window. I finally found 2 ways to untrap the mouse though, maybe you'd want to share them:
- press Alt+Tab and release Tab key (keeping Alt pressed), it brings the mouse pointer back, just move it outside the Poom window to keep it back.
- launch Poom so that its windows is over another app's larger window. To get the mouse pointer back, just Alt+Tab to switch to this other app.
So the Pico-8 mouse trap trick works well and thanks for that, as it gives Poom the FPS experience we all want, but it works a bit too well :). IMO the untrap should be made easier for the user, by, say, releasing the pointer as soon as the game is unfocused (alt+tab, win key...) and should trap the mouse only when clicking on it (the "back to game" click being ignored by the game itself). This is more a Pico-8 than a Poom issue, maybe it's something you'd like to report to Zep ;)

standalone is using an early version of pico - final should have pause menu to unlock mouse (agree pretty annoying atm)

How does the standalone version works ? I can't have to run it !

(2 edits)

launch pico8; type:

folder

extract zip into that directory (e.g. "carts")

launch splore and select poom_0

or execute console commands:

load poom_0.p8
run

This game. I love it. I have been having just the most fun I've had in a long while. I do have some complaints, like the lack of Auto Map or Auto Aim, which can help. But It's not too much of a problem with the level design.

It's all a really great package that really leaves me craving more. I would absolutely love to see a sequel to this. Or even better, a unique stand alone title that uses this Engine to build it. And if it fixes the issues I've mentioned, I will definitely be getting that, even if I have to pay for it. I'm looking forward to see what you create in the future.

how do you make this style may i ask

(+1)

limited resolution and palette + mad artistic skill from @gamecactus

thx

Just amazing! This is pure art!

(1 edit)

thank you for this game i love it :) and how to delete slot?

thanks

what do you mean? reset savegame?

nevermind i throught thus game using slot mode and i really enjoyed this game alot

and i finished it thanks for this game :)

will i play this in split screen mode i mean it says 2 player

This is really cool. :) [I did get stuck in a few areas tho.]

This is so rad I enjoyed that a lot and it is super cool that you used Pico8. Yeah, I hope ID will see this and give a shout out cuz this is lots of work for a pretty much fan port of a game. I think the only thing I had a problem with was that it was hard to strafe, but I think the original was just as hard to strafe in too, so grain of salt. This is great keep making, please!!!!
